Students from the South Texas Academy for Medical Professions in Olmito captured first place at the first Education Collaboration for Aspiring Health Professionals competition, held Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Medical Education Building on the UTRGV Edinburg Campus. Hosted by the UT Health RGV School of Medicine, the competition tasks high school students with developing creative solutions to address healthcare challenges in rural communities.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine celebrated the grand opening of its Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Wednesday, November 14, in San Carlos, in Hidalgo County. UTRGV School of Medicine received a five-year, $3.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration to develop the three AHECs, which will offer free health care to residents and educational opportunities for students enrolled in UTRGV’s health professions programs. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine celebrated the grand opening of its Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) on Thursday, Sept. 20, in the La Victoria community in Starr County. The UTRGV School of Medicine received a five-year, $3.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration to develop the three AHECs, which will offer free healthcare to residents and educational opportunities for students enrolled in UTRGV’s health professions programs. Dr. Leonel Vela and Dr. John Krouse form The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine welcomed its newest students with a White Coat Ceremony on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at the Performing Arts Center of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District. Marking the beginning of their education and career, the new medical students received their signature white lab coats from School of Medicine leaders, then recited the Hippocratic Oath – which acknowledges their primary role as caregivers – in the presence of their loved ones, school leaders, and peers. Dr. John H. Krouse, executive vice president for Health Affairs and dean of the UTRGV School of Medicine, congratulated the students for their achievements thus far and emphasized the importance of staying humble and showing compassion.
