Students from the UTRGV School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Physician Assistant Studies Program in the College of Health Professions, work on a case study Friday, March 1, as part of the first Team-Centric Friday event. More than 160 students – nurse practitioner, physician assistant and first-year medical students – collaborated on how to treat a patient with vision problems. Students from the South Texas Academy for Medical Professions in Olmito captured first place at the first Education Collaboration for Aspiring Health Professionals competition, held Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Medical Education Building on the UTRGV Edinburg Campus. Hosted by the UT Health RGV School of Medicine, the competition tasks high school students with developing creative solutions to address healthcare challenges in rural communities.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine celebrated the grand opening of its Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) on Thursday, Sept. 20, in the La Victoria community in Starr County. The UTRGV School of Medicine received a five-year, $3.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration to develop the three AHECs, which will offer free healthcare to residents and educational opportunities for students enrolled in UTRGV’s health professions programs.
