EDINBURG, Texas – DHR Health proudly welcomes Jose Luis Valdes, MD to its esteemed group of physicians at DHR Health Transplant Institute. As a Transplant Nephrologist, Dr. Valdes will evaluate and manage the care of patients before and after kidney transplant surgery. He joins the Rio Grande Valley’s only kidney transplant center. 

“It is with great pleasure that we welcome Dr. Valdes to our DHR Health Transplant Institute,” said Marissa Castañeda, Senior Executive Vice President at DHR Health. “Like his fellow physicians at the institute, Dr. Valdes exemplifies our patient-first approach and is committed to delivering the highest level of care.”  

Originally from Zacatecas, Mexico, Dr. Valdes is fluent in English and Spanish. He received his Doctorate of Medicine from Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas Unidad Académica de Medicina y Ciencias de la Salud in Mexico. After medical school, he completed physician residency training in Internal Medicine at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, New York. He completed a Nephrology Fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, where he also completed an additional Fellowship in Transplant Nephrology. Dr. Valdes has additional experience working in various healthcare provider positions.

“While doing my medical training, I realized the high incidence and prevalence of kidney disease in disadvantaged populations, particularly in the Hispanic population. I faced many challenges and witnessed a poor quality of life in dialysis patients. Therefore, I made it my goal to provide hope and better quality of life in renal patients in the Rio Grande Valley,” said Dr. Valdes. 

The multidisciplinary team of physicians, surgeons, pharmacists, social workers, and other healthcare providers at DHR Health Transplant Institute provide specialized and compassionate care for patients with kidney, liver, and pancreatic disorders. As the only CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) and UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) certified kidney transplant center in the Rio Grande Valley, the transplant team provides patients with the comprehensive care they need for a new chance at life. 

Dr. Valdes is accepting new patients. His office is located in McAllen at the DHR Health Medical Tower, 1100 E. Dove Avenue, 2nd Floor. To make an appointment, please call (956) 362-5433.
