Transaction to keep hospital a community non-profit and expand health care services through DHR’s operational support

Edinburg, TX–– Leaders at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Health System (DHR) and Mission Regional Medical Center (MRMC) have signed a non-binding letter of intent (LOI) to explore collaborative opportunities between the organizations. The goal is for the entities to enter into a final transaction that would solidify the presence of a community-owned, acute care facility in Mission, Texas for years to come.  This is the first step in a larger, complex process that provides the opportunity for the organizations to explore potential benefits for patients, families, and the community.

The LOI calls for a new community led non-profit board to oversee the operations of the hospital under MRMC’s current hospital license and oversee expansion of services.  “This proposed model will leverage the service excellence our hospital is known for with the added clinical specialist support our community needs. The end-result is a non-profit community hospital that is bigger, better and stronger to meet the healthcare challenges of the future” said Javier Iruegas, CEO of MRMC.

“We are excited to explore how DHR can provide hospital operational expertise to the Mission community by advising the new non-profit owner,” said Carlos Cardenas, M.D., Chairman of the Board of DHR.  The two organizations agree that the goal of a final transaction would be to continue hospital governance in a community non-profit board, for existing employees to continue in their current capacities, and for the new entity to expand health care services to the residents of Mission and the broader region.

Next Steps

With the non-binding letter of intent signed, the organizations can now begin exploring the potential and future of the health care facility in greater detail. The organizations are working toward the signing of definitive agreements by the end of the year.
