Los Angeles–Dr. Beth Karlan, a globally recognized leader in gynecologic oncology, continues to make groundbreaking contributions to the field through her pioneering research, clinical innovation, and tireless advocacy for women’s health. As a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and director of cancer population genetics at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Karlan’s career is defined by a commitment to improving the lives of women affected by gynecologic cancers.

Dr. Karlan’s distinguished career includes receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) in 2021, an honor recognizing her extraordinary impact on advancing cancer research and improving patient care. However, her legacy extends far beyond this recognition. She has devoted her life to unraveling the complexities of gynecologic cancers, with a particular focus on ovarian cancer, hereditary cancers, and the development of targeted therapies.

Her research has led to significant advancements in understanding the molecular drivers of ovarian cancer. Dr. Karlan has enabled earlier detection and more personalized patient treatments by identifying subtype-specific biomarkers. She established a biorepository that collects human tissue, serum, and DNA from women with gynecologic cancers. This resource has fueled landmark studies, including contributions to The Cancer Genome Atlas and the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium, transforming how the scientific community approaches gynecologic malignancies.

Dr. Karlan’s leadership in hereditary cancer research has also been instrumental in expanding knowledge about genetic risks, particularly involving BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. Her work has informed prevention strategies and inspired innovative clinical trials to improve outcomes for patients at high genetic risk. She co-leads a national initiative exploring population-based genetic testing for BRCA mutations, reflecting her ongoing commitment to translating research into actionable solutions.

Beyond her research, Dr. Karlan is a passionate advocate for public health awareness and policy reform. Her testimony before Congress was pivotal in passing the Gynecologic Cancer Education and Awareness Act of 2005, which increased funding and public education efforts for these cancers. She later helped spearhead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Inside Knowledge campaign, which educates women about the symptoms and prevention of gynecologic cancers.

Dr. Karlan has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the American Cancer Society Research Professorship, the Society of Gynecologic Oncology Distinguished Service Award, and the Rosalind Franklin Award for Excellence in Ovarian Cancer Research. In 2012, President Barack Obama appointed her to the National Cancer Advisory Board, and in 2015, she was elected to the National Academy of Medicine. These honors highlight the breadth and depth of her contributions to medicine and public health.

Her influence extends to the next generation of physicians and scientists, many of whom have benefited from her mentorship. Dr. Karlan’s role as Editor-in-Chief of the journals Gynecologic Oncology and Gynecologic Oncology Reports has allowed her to guide the field’s scientific discourse, ensuring that critical findings reach the global medical community.

Dr. Karlan describes her work as a deeply enriching mission. Helping women with gynecologic malignancies to live longer and better lives has not only been my lifelong commitment, but this quest has also greatly enriched my life,” she said. This perspective reflects her holistic approach to patient care, which blends cutting-edge science with compassion and advocacy.

As Dr. Karlan continues her work at UCLA and in national and international collaborations, she remains a driving force in gynecologic oncology. Her dedication to improving women’s health has had a profound and lasting impact, ensuring her legacy as one of the foremost leaders in her field.
