The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday, Dec. 11, signed a letter of intent with the Harlingen CISD to expand their partnership to create a pipeline for students enrolled at the Harlingen High School of Health Professions to the university’s Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences (BMED) program and the UTRGV School of Medicine. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has established the multi-disciplinary UTRGV Center for Vector-Borne Disease (CVBD), a collaborative effort to develop a self-sustaining, research-focused center in South Texas that will study diseases like Zika, chikungunya and dengue. On April 9, the university hosted a panel event on the Edinburg Campus to formally announce and launch the center. Founding members of the CVBD are (from left) Dr. Teresa Feria Arroyo, Dr. Tamer Oraby, Dr. Erin Schuenzel, Dr. Beatriz Tapia, Dr. John M. Thomas II and Dr. Christopher J. Vitek.
