Midsize companies play a critical role in the U.S. economy, serving as a powerful engine for innovation, job creation and economic growth.

Positioned between small businesses and large corporations, these organizations combine the agility and entrepreneurial spirit of smaller firms with the resources and operational strength of larger enterprises.

Approximately 200,000 midsize businesses across the nation generate roughly one-third of private-sector Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employ nearly 48 million Americans, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, making them an essential contributor to the country’s economic success.

While financial performance and growth are important measures of success, a company’s greatest asset remains its people. In today’s competitive workforce environment, employee experience has emerged as a key driver of organizational performance.

“When employees feel valued, supported and connected to their workplace, they are more likely to be engaged, productive and committed to delivering exceptional results,” says Carolyn Petties, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, System Director of Human Resource Operations, South Texas Health System (STHS). “For midsize companies in particular, fostering a positive workplace culture can strengthen retention, encourage innovation and create the strong sense of belonging that fuels long-term success.”

Organizations that invest in their employees not only build stronger teams, but also enhance their ability to serve customers, support communities and achieve sustainable growth.

It’s this commitment to people, culture and employee experience that has earned South Texas Health System national recognition.

“Being named one of America’s Greatest Midsize Workplaces is a tremendous honor and a testament to South Texas Health System’s unwavering commitment to creating a positive employee experience rooted in service excellence,” said Petties. “Our employees are the heart of everything we do. This recognition reflects the dedication of our workforce and our shared commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of the patients and families who trust us with their care.”

To identify America’s Greatest Midsize Workplaces 2026, Newsweek partnered with data analytics firm Aniline to evaluate more than 4,700 employers nationwide. The ranking was based on a comprehensive analysis of over 2.6 million employee reviews, regional survey results and more than 120 workplace metrics, including leadership, integrity, compensation, career development, culture and work-life balance.

“This definitive ranking elevates the midmarket leaders who have proven their resilience and operational excellence. For our readers, this list serves as a trusted validation tool, identifying the most reliable, forward-thinking midsize companies positioned for long-term collaborative success.” said Jennifer H. Cunningham, Editor-In-Chief, Newsweek.
