SAN JUAN – January 13 and 14, were pivotal days in the PSJA area as the District partnered with Hidalgo County to administer over 2,000 COVID-19 vaccines to the community.

“We thank Hidalgo County and the Hidalgo County Health Department for partnering with us in this two-day operation,” said PSJA School Board President Jorge Zambrano. “It takes hundreds of first responders to mobilize and provide this service to our community. We are blessed for each and every one of our employees who were willing to take the lead. We are looking forward to partnering for more vaccination clinics in the near future.”

PSJA ISD personnel had been practicing for such an event for the last 20 years as part of the local Operation Lone Star summer efforts in conjunction with Hidalgo County and Military forces to provide free medical care to uninsured families in the area. The goal of Operation Lone Star has been to provide medical resources to the community and prepare for this type of large-scale event to provide mass vaccination opportunities.

“We have trained and prepared District personnel to support the efforts to provide access to medical resources in our county,” said PSJA Superintendent Dr. Jorge L. Arredondo. “It is our duty as a public education entity to ensure the health and wellness of our families. This event showcased the commitment our school board, administration and county leadership have for their health and safety.”

To continue to support such efforts, the District has invested $38,000 towards the purchase of freezers, refrigerators, and data loggers. This equipment is needed to host additional vaccination sites at PSJA successfully. This equipment will also hold up to 30,000 doses at a time.

Once new dates for upcoming vaccination clinics are determined they will be shared with the community-at-large. Members of the community may also call the PSJA COVID-19 Hotline for information at (956) 354-2015.
