South Texas College’s Physical Therapist Assistant Program celebrated its 20th anniversary by graduating 19 students at a special pinning ceremony May 21.

The UTRGV School of Nursing on May 23 welcomed eight students from the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District who are prospective UTRGV nursing students enrolled in Project HEAL2 (Health Education and Leadership for All). The program, operated by the Region One Education Service Center, provides high school students interested in a nursing career with educational opportunities and experiences to kick start their career. School of Medicine Welcomes new Cancer Immunology Team

Melissa Cienega (left) and Michelle Leon display the two sets of pig lungs they will use to educate students on the dangers of smoking. The lungs on the left are normal healthy lungs, and the set on the right are lungs that have been continuously exposed to smoke. The two students from STC’s Respiratory Therapy program have been selected as regional ambassadors for a smoke-free initiative, and report for training in Washington D.C. in April.

Students from the UTRGV School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Physician Assistant Studies Program in the College of Health Professions, work on a case study Friday, March 1, as part of the first Team-Centric Friday event. More than 160 students – nurse practitioner, physician assistant and first-year medical students – collaborated on how to treat a patient with vision problems. The interprofessional education training exercise addressed one of the goals of the medical school and the allied health professions programs at UTRGV: to prepare future healthcare providers to work in an interprofessional team-based setting.
