In this issue you will meet and get to know Dr. Rafael Rafols, who is a unique physician that provides very important services for the community. He is a medical doctor specializing in difficult non-healing wounds. He has been chosen to be our Mega Doctor for September 2014 for his unique approach to wound medicine, his perseverance in bringing a solution and his dedication to his patients.
Dr. Rafols received his medical degree from the Universidad de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico where he spent five years. He attended the 5th Pathway Program at the Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He conducted his residency at the McAllen Family Medicine Residency Program in McAllen, Texas.
Dr. Rafols told Mega Doctor News that he has been providing wound care services exclusively for the past three years. He said, “I’m certified in my primary specialty as well as in wound care.”
In fact, Dr. Rafols is a Fellow of the Academy of Clinical Wound Specialists, and a Certified Wound Specialist Physician by the American Board of Wound Management. Additionally, he is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, and is an active member of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society as well.
On another matter, Dr. Ricardo Abreu a Pulmonologist and Sleep Medicine Specialist spoke to Mega doctor News about his specialty and also about the importance of Electronic Medical Records.
You will also read about Dr. Jorge Edmundo Dominguez a pediatrician that says that if you don’t take your medication, you will not get well. He emphasized that non-compliance by patients affects the ability to provide optimal care.
In this issue you also get to know J.L. Cázares DDS, he is civic-minded dentist who combines his time with local issues to help his community. Good for him and thank you Dr. Cázares.
And for those that only criticize the healthcare system, here is a doctor that is working to cut waste. Dr. Luis Delgado is a Family Medicine physician in McAllen, Texas. He spearheaded the creation the Rio Grande Valley Health Alliance; it is an Accountable Care Organization to benefit patients and the overall healthcare system.
Dr. Delgado and other physicians are working on a project better known as an Accountable Care Organization (ACO). He has important and valid questions like, “Where are tax dollars going? Why is the system going broke? And what is it that we are doing wrong that is causing this?”
You will enjoy and learn of some of the things physicians are doing to better protect the patients as well.
Congratulations! Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen has been re-certified with a “Gold Seal of Approval™” specifically for knee and hip replacement surgeries by a national accrediting organization for healthcare organizations, The Joint Commission. The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 20,500 health care organizations and programs in the United States.
Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell handed the Key to the City to Dr. Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., and proclaimed Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, as “Dr. Kenneth I. Shine Day” in recognition of the doctor’s long and nationally recognized career in healthcare and, in particular, his leadership in development of the medical school in the Rio Grande Valley.
The recognition went to a deserving physician. Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell handed the Key to the City of Harlingen to Dr. Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., and proclaimed Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, as “Dr. Kenneth I. Shine Day” in recognition of the doctor’s long and nationally recognized career in healthcare and, in particular, his leadership in development of the medical school in the Rio Grande Valley.
