Robotic surgery, which utilizes innovative robotic systems as tools to help surgeons perform complex procedures with increased precision, dexterity and control, is considered among the most groundbreaking advancements in medical technology.

Robotic surgery has changed the landscape of surgical procedures, and it’s poised to continue shaping the future of healthcare by offering transformative possibilities and emphasizing the importance of collaboration and innovation.

Committed to better-quality patient outcomes, including shorter hospital stays, improved recovery times and minimized risks, South Texas Health System McAllen – a Level 1 Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center– is expanding its minimally invasive surgical capabilities.

In April, STHS McAllen will launch its robotic surgery program with the arrival of the da Vinci 5 Robotic Surgical System, the latest in robotic assisted surgical technology from Intuitive Surgical.

Designed to improve precision, efficiency and patient outcomes, the new surgical system possesses new and improved features like force feedback – a first of its kind technology allowing surgeons with varying experience levels to deliver up to 43% less force on tissue by sensing the push and pull forces at the instrument tip.

Offering unparalleled precision and control, surgeons can operate on a patient via one or more small incisions, typically less than or equal to one centimeter long, as opposed to the larger incisions required in traditional surgery.

“A positive patient experience drives all that we do at STHS McAllen,” says Emma Montes-Ewing, Chief Executive Officer, STHS McAllen. “By incorporating the new da Vinci 5 Robotic Surgical System into our standard of care, we will be able to enhance the patient experience with a reduced length of stay and better patient recovery with less pain.”

To help introduce Intuitive Surgical’s newest technology to the facility, STHS McAllen is launching a special Name the Robot contest for local elementary school-aged students.

Children interested in helping name the new robotic surgical system at the facility can submit a name suggestion by having their parents complete the official entry form online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/QYYNKQ7, including their reasoning behind their proposed name, no later than Friday, March 28.

The three finalists and their parents will be invited to attend STHS McAllen’s official robot naming event on Thursday, April 10 at 10:00 a.m., where the chosen name will be revealed.

“This Name the Robot contest is our way of integrating the communities we proudly serve into this momentous occasion for STHS McAllen and inspiring the next generation of healthcare heroes,” says Tom Castaneda, System Director for Marketing and Public Relations, STHS. “We’re excited to begin collected submissions and look forward to celebrating our eventual winner, who will forever be part of the new da Vinci 5 Robotic Surgical System’s history at STHS McAllen. So, we’re encouraging all elementary school-aged children across the Rio Grande Valley to get creative!”

In addition to bragging rights, the winner will be awarded special prizes from South Texas Health System and have the opportunity to have their photo taken with the robot in its new home within the STHS McAllen Surgical Services Department.
