In the latest installment of its “Let’s Talk Children’s Health” series, STHS Children’s will provide a back-to-school checklist for parents to help them feel less overwhelmed as the new school year approaches.

It may be hard to image, but the back-to-school season is right around the corner! For children, the first day of school can trigger anxiety as they worry about fitting in, navigating coursework and being away from their families. But kids aren’t the only ones who get stressed out during back-to-school season.

Knowing school is an important part of their child’s life, parents may feel enormous pressure to help their child realize their full potential from day one, especially if their children will be enrolling in school for the very first time. In addition to worrying about ensuring their children are physically and mentally prepared for a new school year, leading child health concerns for parents, according to a survey by C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, include overuse of devices/screen time (67%), social media (66%), internet safety (62%), depression/suicide (57%), bullying (53%) and unhealthy diet.

So, to help ensure their children have a safe, healthy and happy start to the new school year, South Texas Health System Children’s will dedicate its latest Let’s Talk Children’s Health webinar to back-to-school readiness.

From developing healthy sleep routines and planning for safe travel to and from school to building good homework and study habits to providing healthy eating options during the school day, the online seminar will be broadcast live via South Texas Health System Children’s Facebook page and highlight strategies that parents and caregivers can use to help their children successfully transition from summer break to the classroom environment.

“Whether your child will be attending school for the first time or heading back to the classroom as a returning student, there’s a lot to be done to get ready for the year ahead,” says Kim Davis, Pediatric Administrator, STHS Children’s. “The back-to-school period will always be accompanied by nervous excitement and anxiety for children and parents alike, and STHS Children’s is committed to helping Valley families make a smooth transition into the school year ahead through this important webinar.”
