EDINBURG, Texas – The Hidalgo County Commissioners Court has appointed Dairen Sarmiento Rangel as the new Director of the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department (HCHD). 

Sarmiento Rangel succeeds Eddie Olivarez, the department’s longtime Chief Administrative Officer, who retired after 22 years of service.

Sarmiento Rangel holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (1992) with a major in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration (1998), both from The University of Texas Pan American. Her career with Hidalgo County includes roles in the County Clerk’s office, the County Judge’s Office, the County Budget Office, and the Human Resources Department. She has served as the Assistant Director of HCHD since January 2021. Previously, she held the role of Human Services Division Manager from February 2007 to January 2021.

“I am deeply honored by the trust placed in me by the Hidalgo County Commissioners Court to lead our Health and Human Services Department,” said Sarmiento Rangel. “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to County Judge Richard Cortez and our County Commissioners for entrusting me with this role and supporting our vision for quality and accessible public health in Hidalgo County. I look forward to continuing our department’s work to promote health and safety for all residents.”

She continued, “I would also like to express my gratitude to Mr. Eddie Olivarez, whose leadership over the past 22 years has left a lasting legacy. I am inspired by his commitment to public health and wish him a well-deserved, fulfilling retirement.”

This appointment marks a new chapter for the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department as it continues its mission to protect and improve public health for all residents. Under Sarmiento Rangel’s leadership, the department looks forward to building on its successes and addressing the evolving needs of Hidalgo County.
