EDINBURG – More than two weeks after the first case of the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 reached Hidalgo County, four new cases of the disease have been confirmed by state health officials, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said Friday afternoon.

“As I previously warned, the spread of the Delta variant was going to continue to occur in Hidalgo County,” Cortez said. “This virus is significantly more infectious than the previous strain and unvaccinated individuals are at the highest risk.”

The new cases derive from four people who reside in Hidalgo County, and are not migrants, confirmed Health & Human Services Chief Administrative Officer Eddie Olivarez.

Details on how and where they were infected are not available as county health officials continue to investigate. It is confirmed that two of the residents were not vaccinated, however at this time it is not known which of the two they were. None of the four people were hospitalized for their symptoms.

“We strongly encourage all eligible residents to get vaccinated and help us stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community,” Cortez said.
