In a significant step towards enhancing pediatric healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley, Driscoll, a nonprofit pediatric healthcare system, celebrated the grand opening of its new Quick Care clinic in Edinburg, Texas, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. This clinic marks Driscoll’s second Quick Care facility in the Valley and is strategically located near the upcoming Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley, set to be the first freestanding designated children’s hospital in this medically underserved region.

Dr. Roel Cantu, a seasoned pediatrician and the medical director at Driscoll, shared insights during an interview with Mega Doctor News. With over three decades of experience in pediatrics, Dr. Cantu has been integral to Driscoll’s growth, overseeing the Quick Care clinics and running his private practice in San Juan.

Dr. Cantu emphasized the role of the new Quick Care clinic in alleviating the burden on emergency services. The facility, operating since October 24th, offers evening and weekend hours to provide accessible care. This initiative is part of Driscoll’s strategy to manage non-emergency cases effectively, ensuring that more serious cases receive prompt attention in emergency rooms.

The Rio Grande Valley faces a critical shortage of pediatricians and subspecialists. Dr. Cantu highlighted the importance of local residency programs in attracting and retaining medical talent in the area. He pointed out that the creation of these programs by various institutions, including the new residency program in Edinburg, is a crucial step toward addressing this shortage.

A recent $17 million donation to Driscoll has sparked optimism. These funds are earmarked for recruiting more pediatric specialists to the Valley, a region with an obvious deficit in this area. Dr. Cantu believes that attractive recruitment packages and institutional support can entice more professionals to South Texas.

When asked about the current pediatric health landscape, Dr. Cantu noted that while acute respiratory issues are common, the overall health of children in the area is generally good. However, the need for subspecialists, such as cardiologists and pediatric surgeons, is pronounced. Driscoll has historically been a leader in pediatric heart surgery and continues to play a vital role in treating complex cases.

A Message to Parents: ‘When in Doubt, Get it Checked Out.’

Dr. Cantu’s advice to parents is clear: proactive healthcare is crucial. He urges parents to seek medical advice promptly when concerned, especially given the clinic’s extended hours. His early intervention philosophy aligns with Driscoll’s mission to provide comprehensive, accessible pediatric care.

Driscoll’s latest Quick Care clinic, located at 2821 Michelangelo Dr, Suite 101, Edinburg, TX, is more than just a healthcare facility. It represents a beacon of hope and a commitment to the health and well-being of children in the Rio Grande Valley. With its late hours and dedicated staff, the clinic stands ready to serve the community, ensuring that the children of South Texas have access to quality healthcare when they need it most.
