Dr. Laura Seligman (at left), UTRGV associate professor of Psychological Science, and Dr. Liza Talavera-Garza, Psychological Science lecturer, are working on a study aimed at developing treatments that alleviate dental anxiety in children, making it possible for children and adolescents to get regular dental care and feel comfortable when visiting the dentist. Dr. Zeeshan Afzal, a third-year medical resident in the UTRGV Family Medicine Residency Program at McAllen Medical Center, conducted a study on the prevalence of murine typhus, a flea-borne disease, in the Rio Grande Valley. The study concludes that the primary symptoms – high-grade fever, rash and body ache – often go misdiagnosed and can lead to more serious complications. A team of four UTRGV mechanical engineering students have designed a prototype device that will help Parkinson’s disease victims right legibly again. The development of their Self-Stabilization Holder, a yearlong endeavor which became their senior design project, was overseen by Dr. Karen Lozano, professor of mechanical engineering (standing). This spring the device placed second in the Rafael Munguia UTRGV Business Plan Competition overseen by the Robert C. Vackar College of Business & Entrepreneurship.
