EDINBURG, Texas – DHR Health Urologic Oncologist, Dr. David G. Alonzo, has successfully performed his 1,000th da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical procedure for the treatment of urologic cancers. This significant milestone highlights Alonzo’s extensive expertise in advanced, minimally invasive urological surgery and reinforces DHR Health’s commitment to providing cutting-edge cancer care to patients of the Rio Grande Valley.
Da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery offers enhanced precision, visualization, and dexterity allowing surgeons to perform complex procedures through small incisions. The result is typically less pain, reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and a faster return to normal activities for patients. Alonzo’s high volume of robotic procedures includes radical prostatectomies, partial nephrectomies, and other complex urological surgeries.
“Reaching 1,000 robotic surgeries is a testament to the benefits of this technology and the dedication of our entire surgical team,” said Alonzo. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see our patients recover more quickly and with better outcomes, and I look forward to continuing to provide this advanced care.”
Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, Alonzo earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas – Pan American. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He completed his internship in general surgery and residency in urology at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. He continued his training with a fellowship in surgical urologic oncology at the University of Miami.
As a fellowship-trained surgeon, Alonzo has expertise in the treatment of urologic cancers and specializes in robotic surgery for prostate, penile, bladder, and kidney cancer. This milestone not only marks a professional achievement for Alonzo but also reflects DHR Health’s dedication to improving patient outcomes through advanced technology and innovative surgical care.
