CLEVELAND CLINIC – Feeling drained after spending time outside in the sun? A Cleveland Clinic doctor explains why we often feel tired after soaking up the summer sunshine.

“The sun causes us to be more dehydrated, and when we’re dehydrated, our body uses more energy. It’s also true that when we’re out in the sun, our body has to work harder in general, including our metabolism,” said Neha Vyas, MD, a family medicine physician at Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Vyas explained this extra effort our body takes to stay cool is the main reason we feel sluggish after being in the heat.

Sunburn can drain our energy as well, since the body then needs to work harder to repair the damaged skin.

That’s why it’s important to wear sunscreen and take breaks, especially during midday when the sun is strongest.

Dr. Vyas also recommends drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcohol because it can make dehydration and fatigue worse.

While it can be normal to feel a little tired from the sun, watch out for signs you may be experiencing something more serious like heatstroke.

“The warning signs that you’re getting too much sun exposure are dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and in rare cases, it can proceed to confusion and even seizures,” Dr. Vyas said.

Dr. Vyas urged to seek medical care immediately if you notice any of these signs or other concerning symptoms.

Experiencing Numbness? How to Tell Common Tingling from Neuropathy

Most people experience numbness or the familiar pins-and-needles sensation from time to time. However, these symptoms can sometimes signal an underlying medical condition such as neuropathy, explains Megan Everson, M.D., a neurosurgeon and spine expert at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire.
