EDINBURG, Texas –  In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the DHR Health Oncology Institute will host “Walk and Talk with a Doc” on Thursday, October 2, at 6:30 p.m. The free event will take place at the DHR Health Heart Institute parking lot, located at 5525 Doctors Drive in Edinburg. Everyone is welcome to join, and attendees are encouraged to wear pink in support of the fight against breast cancer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), breast cancer is the second most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States. About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime, which makes awareness and early detection critically important.

The event will begin with short presentations from Dr. Jose Cruz, a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist; Dr. Cera Kroenke, a board-certified general surgeon who treats a wide range of conditions, including the surgical removal of malignant breast tissue; and Dr. Lyuba Levine, the only dual board-certified gynecologic oncologist in the region, highly specialized in the evaluation and treatment of women with gynecological cancers. Together, these physicians bring advanced expertise in cancer care and have been serving the Rio Grande Valley community for several years. Their presentations will highlight the importance of prevention, early detection, and treatment options for breast and gynecological cancers. Afterward, participants will join the physicians for a one-mile community walk. During the walk, attendees will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the doctors while getting their steps in.

This event is designed to promote physical activity, education, and community support—all important factors in the fight against breast cancer. DHR Health invites the community to attend this walk to engage in physical activity, expand their knowledge on prevention, support those fighting breast cancer, and learn more about the resources available at DHR Health. As a nationally recognized Breast Center of Excellence, DHR Health provides comprehensive, patient-centered care that is tailored to each individual—from initial screenings and diagnosis to breast cancer treatment.

“Breast cancer is most treatable when it’s found early, which is why education and awareness are so important. By coming together as a community to walk and talk, we can empower one another with the knowledge and encouragement needed to take proactive steps for our health,” said Cruz.

In addition to the walk and presentations, the event will feature giveaways and information booths on mammography and breast health. There will also be a mini-activity area for children, where DHR Health’s mascot, Dr. Ted E. Bear, will make a special appearance.
