It’s a simple fact: physical activity can improve your health and reduce the risk of developing several diseases like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Staying active can help you feel better, look better and live better, with regular exercise proven to have immediate and long-term health benefits, including improved strength and stamina; relief from stress, anxiety, depression and anger; and a longer life expectancy.

Unfortunately, only one in four adults and one in five adolescents in the United States meets the physical activity guidelines for aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, per the CDC.

Meanwhile, about 40% of U.S. adults are obese, according to the CDC, with nearly 32% overweight and almost 8% severely obese.

It’s estimated that physical inactivity is responsible for 6-10% of premature deaths, coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes and breast and colon cancer globally, per the World Health Organization.

As the temperature rises and the days get longer, you may find yourself longing to lose those extra pounds and feel your best in the summer sun. So, to help Valley residents be more physically active, South Texas Health System will dedicate its latest Let’s Talk Your Health webinar to summer fitness. From activities that can be done as a family to solo workouts to help you shed the excess weight, the online seminar will offer summer fitness ideas to keep you moving and motivated throughout the summer while highlighting the physical activity guidelines for Americans of all ages.

“It may take some time, energy and a commitment to taking steps to improving your health and well-being, but you can achieve your fitness goals, even if you haven’t worked out in a long time,” says Tom Castaneda, System Director of Marketing & Public Relations, South Texas Health System. “Health experts say the key is to start gradually, set realistic goals for yourself and stick to a consistent workout routine. As you progress, you can adjust your workout routine so you can continue to challenge yourself and constantly improve. Our Let’s Talk Summer Fitness webinar will offer insights and advice from a certified health and wellness coach to help you get started on your wellness journey.”

Led by Rafael Curiel, MC, NBC-HWC, LMT, NASM-CPT/CNC, the Employee Wellness Coach for the City of McAllen, the online seminar will be broadcast live on the South Texas Health System Facebook page on Tuesday, July 16, from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. The webinar is free and open to the public.
