EDINBURG, Texas – The confirmed number of monkeypox cases in Hidalgo County has risen to six, according to the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department.

The latest update comes as the Hidalgo County health department announced it would begin providing routine, weekly updates via social media at its department Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, as well as the Hidalgo County social media pages.

Each Monday, the health department will release the total number of confirmed cases locally, as well at the state and national level. (Example is attached).  Area physicians and other health care providers who are testing for monkeypox are required to immediately report to the health department any suspected case they will be testing.

Few details are available about those who have been diagnosed with monkeypox locally because of the sensitivity involving the spread of the disease.

“Unlike COVID, this disease is more difficult to spread because it involves physical contact with an infected person versus the airborne spread of COVID,” said Eduardo Olivarez, the chief administrative officer for the Hidalgo County Department of Health and Human Services. “We have determined that a weekly update on the number of monkeypox cases will suffice for now. If the rate of infection increases noticeably we will provide more frequent updates.”
