As the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) makes its way through the national community, the City of McAllen would like to remind the public that its top priority is to work to ensure the health and safety of our residents, visitors, and employees. City of McAllen staff has been coordinating with the local, county, state, and federal leaders daily for the past several weeks, and is working hard to adapt to an almost constantly changing event.

In keeping with practices within the State of Texas during health-related events such as this one, county health departments take the leading role in response. As such, McAllen officials have been in constant conversation with the Hidalgo County Health Department, and our City of McAllen web page, www.mcallen.net, as well as our official social media pages all point directly to Hidalgo County’s official website at www.hidalgocounty.us and its Coronavirus page for updates and information on the virus.

In addition, we have taken multiple steps to keep both our residents and employees healthy. Aside from increasing the frequency and intensity of regular cleaning in all our City of McAllen facilities, and where prudent, we have added hand sanitizer stations for patrons.

You will also notice signage in almost all City of McAllen facilities reminding everyone to practice good hygiene during this situation. Those signs remind everyone to:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Use a tissue or elbow to cover coughs and sneezes
  • Keep hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Stay home if you’re sick
  • Avoid others that are sick
  • Sanitize frequently touched surfaces

We ask that our residents follow these precautions while in our City of McAllen facilities, and encourage them to do so in their places of employment, as well as in businesses, restaurants, houses of worship, or other places they may frequent, and when at home as well.

McAllen residents who feel sick should call their doctor before going to the doctor’s office and should consider avoiding visits to the emergency room unless the situation is a true emergency to avoid spreading illness to others. Telemedicine should be considered as an alternative for more minor medical issues, including flu-like symptoms.

Finally, we encourage our residents and visitors to stay calm and show each other the care and kindness that McAllen is known for. Our healthcare workers, store owners, and employees are working hard to take care of all of us during this difficult time; let’s remind them how much their hard work and dedication is appreciated.
