Laredo, Texas – Mr. Blas Castaneda has been appointed as Chair of the AHEC 25 Year Anniversary Celebration Gala. The event is to celebrate 25 years of AHEC service to the communities in Webb, Zapata, Jim Hogg, LaSalle, Dimmit and Duval counties. AHEC Chair Mercurio Martinez, Jr. along with various community leaders joined in congratulating Mr. Castaneda and expressing unwavering support to ensure the event is a successful gathering. 

Blas Castaneda, Gala Chairman and founding AHEC Board member, has been a strong supporter of AHEC, over the years, and its menu of programs. His passion for assisting everyone to aspire and seek a higher education, regardless of their chosen field or place in their educational ladder is admirable and supports the mission of AHEC. “I have always looked for ways to assist our youth in completing their education; they are the future of our communities. If they (youth) succeed then we will be impacted in a positive manner” AHEC supports the same mission and “I commit myself to making sure we celebrate and create momentum to support our youth” Mr. Castaneda remarked about his role as Chairman of the Gala. The Gala will highlight the service offered to the multiple counties and the number of lives touched by the AHEC programs. The Gala is being sponsored and hosted by International Bank of Commerce in Laredo, Texas and will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. at IBOC Annex Building on Jacaman Road, Laredo, Texas. 

The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) of the Mid Rio Grande Border Area is an outreach program under the UT Health San Antonio and is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization with a mission to enhance the quality of life in the communities by increasing the number of well-trained health care workers; enhancing academic resources; and fostering a healthy lifestyle though community education programs.
