Edinburg, TX—For young patients at DHR Health, a small act of kindness ensures that children are comfortable in what can be a very scary situation. In December 2017, DHR received a donation of teddy bears to give to children in the emergency room. The bears provide comfort for a child whose family member is sick or injured, and help ease a little one’s fear and discomfort during what is usually an unhappy visit to the hospital. The donation program, started by Paula Owen of the Rio Grande Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, continues to provide stuffed animals for children in the hospital.

DHR also received a donation of children’s books for its pediatric oncology department. Gayle Runnels, from the Rio Grande Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, provided copies of Amigo, the Friendly Gray Whale, a book that she and her sister wrote and illustrated about the migration of gray whales. The book tells the story of one such California gray whale, a playful adolescent named Amigo. Separated from his mother, Bonita, Amigo makes the long journey without her, discovering new friends, facing new challenges, and finding new loves along the way. Included with the books are interactive CD’s for children to watch and listen to as they read the book.
