Spine health plays a vital role in overall wellness, mobility and quality of life. A healthy spine is the backbone of a healthier, more active life, supporting proper posture, balance and movement while protecting the nervous system.
“Your spine is more than just the backbone of your body; it’s what supports you through every step, every movement and every moment of your life,” says Chris Casso, MD, FAAFP, DABOM, a board-certified family medicine physician with South Texas Health System (STHS) Clinics. “When you take care of your spine through proper movement, strength and preventative care, you’re reducing pain and reclaiming your mobility, your independence and your ability to live life to the fullest. It’s an investment in your long-term health and well-being.”
Think of your spine as the main highway of your nervous system, housing and protecting the spinal cord, which serves as the primary communication pathway between your brain and the rest of your body.
The human spine is a remarkable structure, made up of 33 vertebrae and more than 120 muscles and ligaments working together to support your body. This intricate system allows you to stand tall, bend, twist and move freely throughout your day.
Unfortunately, poor spinal health is a widespread issue in the United States. Up to 80% of adults will experience low back pain at some point in their lives, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), making it one of the leading causes of disability and lost productivity nationwide.
Over time, poor spinal health can create a ripple effect throughout the body, impacting far more than just the back. It can disrupt the nervous system, limit mobility and lead to chronic pain. In more advanced cases, these issues may even contribute to compression of internal organs, affecting essential functions such as digestion and the ability to breathe fully.
“Spinal health isn’t something you can afford to overlook,” says Dr. Casso. “When the spine is compromised over time, it can gradually affect nearly every aspect of your health, from how you move to how your body functions at its core.”
The good news is that many spine-related issues are preventable. By maintaining good posture, staying active, using proper lifting techniques and adopting healthy daily habits, individuals can reduce their risk of back and neck pain while supporting proper spinal alignment.
Maintaining a healthy spine is essential to your overall structural health, influencing everything from posture and flexibility to balance and risk of pain.
“Small, consistent habits can make a big difference when it comes to protecting your spine,” says Dr. Casso. “By being mindful of how you move and care for your body each day, you can help prevent pain and preserve your mobility over the long term.”
