The Rio Grande Valley is witnessing a game-changing approach to healthcare education, thanks to the dedicated efforts of professionals like Dr. Alexandria Escobedo at DHR Health. Dr. Escobedo, who serves in an administrative role within the education department, is at the forefront of initiatives designed to empower the region’s youth through the LASER program (Leaders in the Advancement of Science and Education and Research). Her work exemplifies the mission to uplift the community by nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals.
The LASER program is a cornerstone of DHR Health’s educational outreach, spearheaded by Dr. Escobedo. Targeting high-achieving students from across the Valley, the program offers a comprehensive mentorship experience that begins in the eighth grade and continues through the first year of university. With over 5,000 applications received, only 50 students are selected, making this an exclusive opportunity for the region’s most promising youth.
“These students are incredibly motivated,” Dr. Escobedo says. “About 94% of them aspire to become physicians, but we also have future pharmacists, physical therapists, and nurse practitioners in the group.”
“The LASER program gives students an opportunity that not everyone has the privilege of having,” says RN Maritza Padilla, Chief of Staff at DHR Health. “These opportunities give students a step forward in following career paths they wouldn’t have thought possible.” This sentiment reflects the program’s goal of providing students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to pursue healthcare careers.
“The LASER program offers our students an invaluable opportunity to explore and pursue careers in science and healthcare. It’s about giving them early exposure and hands-on experience, which I wish I had when I started,” Padilla continues. “One of the biggest challenges we face is ensuring our community knows about the comprehensive care and services available at DHR Health. Programs like LASER educate our future healthcare professionals and help bridge that gap in awareness, supporting the community to take full advantage of our resources.”
What sets the LASER program apart is its holistic approach to education. Dr. Escobedo emphasizes that the program is not just about academic success but also about personal development. “We focus on building their confidence, improving their test-taking and study skills, and teaching them how to manage stress. We want them to see the patient as a whole person, addressing not just the medical but also the emotional and spiritual aspects of care.” This well-rounded focus ensures that participants are not only prepared for the rigors of medical school but also equipped to handle the personal challenges that come with a healthcare career.
“It’s important to nurture these bright young minds,” adds Brenda R. Garcia, an RN Educator at DHR Health. “We give them a little taste, a little hands-on experience, and a lot of knowledge that will give them a foot up when the time comes for them to apply to college.” This hands-on approach and academic rigor ensure that students are competitive candidates for university admissions and scholarships.
“As an RN Educator, I see firsthand the incredible potential in our students, especially those who might not have had access to these opportunities before. By introducing them to the wide range of healthcare careers—from nursing to respiratory therapy—we’re not just teaching them about the profession but giving them the tools and confidence to pursue their dreams. The resilience I’ve witnessed in new nurses, particularly those who began their careers during the pandemic, gives me great hope for the future of healthcare. These programs are essential in rebuilding our workforce, ensuring that the next generation is prepared and inspired to lead in the healthcare field,” Garcia adds.
In addition to preparing future doctors and nurses, Dr. Escobedo is also focused on expanding students’ understanding of the various career paths within the healthcare industry. She highlights the importance of roles like biomedical technicians, surgical technicians, and data analysts—critical to the healthcare ecosystem but often overlooked in traditional career counseling.
Dr. Escobedo’s commitment to education and community development extends beyond individual programs. She envisions a future where the LASER program and similar initiatives address healthcare workforce shortages and break the cycle of poverty for many families in the Rio Grande Valley. DHR Health is positioned to uplift the community’s overall socioeconomic status by providing stable, well-paying job opportunities.
“The beautiful thing about DHR Health is that it’s privately owned, so there are many initiatives we can implement tailored to the community’s needs,” notes Padilla. This flexibility allows DHR Health to respond quickly to local needs, ensuring that programs like LASER are effective and impactful.
Padilla points out, “Looking back, it’s incredible to see how much the healthcare landscape in the Rio Grande Valley has evolved. Programs like LASER, which were once unimaginable here, are now paving the way for the next generation of medical professionals, and I’m proud to be a part of that progress.”
As DHR Health continues to invest in education and outreach, the region will benefit from a robust pipeline of skilled healthcare professionals. Through her work with the LASER program, Dr. Alexandria Escobedo is shaping the future of healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley and inspiring a new generation of healthcare leaders. Her dedication to education, commitment to her community, and holistic approach to student development promotes a brighter and healthier future for the region.
