There’s no denying the impact of robotic surgery in the healthcare industry, with the advancement of robot-assisted surgery changing the game for surgeons and patients alike through improved accuracy, shorter recovery times and less pain.

In 2021, about 644,000 robotic surgeries were performed in the United States, per the National Institutes of Health, with that figure expected to reach one million by 2028.

Designated as a Center of Excellence in robotic, minimally invasive and hernia surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation, South Texas Health System Edinburg has performed thousands of robot-assisted procedures since acquiring the facility’s first da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system in 2015. To meet the mounting need to provide minimally invasive surgical options for patients, the hospital added a second da Vinci unit in 2021. The two robotic surgical system have resulted in reduced surgery recovery times and improved patient outcomes.

Distinct from traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy, robotic surgery combines robotic accuracy with a human surgeons’ expertise, allowing physicians to perform minimally invasive procedures with unparalleled precision and control.

da Vinci robotic surgical systems, like the ones used at STHS Edinburg, consist of robotic arms that can be equipped with surgical instruments, a surgical console operated by the surgeon and a high-definition vision system that provides a magnified 3D view of the surgical site and helps surgeons operate with precision, flexibility and wider range of motion and control.

Over the last 25 years, robotic surgery has been used globally to perform a variety of surgeries, including hernia repairs, colorectal surgeries, hysterectomies and bariatric surgery.

With the increasing interest in minimally invasive procedures, STHS Edinburg will be highlighting the new da Vinci V robotic surgical system to healthcare professionals and college students pursuing careers in healthcare on Thursday, September 26. Taking place from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the first floor near the gift shop, the special event will allow participants to engage with the robotic surgical system through interactive demonstrations, learn more about the benefits of robotic surgery and interact with STHS Edinburg leaders and surgeons to learn more about the hospital’s robotic surgery program.
