A favorite time of year for most children, the summer season is typically filled with amusing activities like swimming, bike riding, cookouts, travel and plenty of outdoor fun.
Additionally, the summer months provide families with the opportunity to spend some quality time as a family unit while enjoying a break from the stresses of school and warmer weather.
But, as the temperatures rise, so does the need for safety precautions. From bicycle and playground injuries and heat-related illness to food poisoning and insect bites and stings, summer can bring with it some potential dangers for kids.
“As the warm weather settles in, making time to get outside is certainly a must,” says Kimberly Davis, MBA, BSN, RN, Pediatric Administrator, South Texas Health System Children’s. “But it’s equally important to be mindful of potential risks like sunburn, dehydration and traumatic brain injury and other hazards to health that are more widespread during the summer months.”
Between June and August, a significant number of children visit emergency rooms across the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with approximately 25% of all ER visits occurring during these months due to children having more free time to engage in activities that may increase their risk of injury.
To help parents and caregivers protect their children’s health by keeping safety top of mind this summer, South Texas Health System Children’s is dedicating its latest Let’s Talk Children’s Health webinar to summer safety.
Streaming live via the STHS Children’s Facebook page on Wednesday, May 21, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., the online seminar will feature a children’s safety expert discussing various strategies parents and caregivers can utilize to keep children safe and secure no matter whether they’re at home, on the road, around water or outdoors.
