McAllen, Texas South Texas College students in the Nursing and Allied Health Division can now apply for scholarships courtesy of South Texas Health System.

On Thursday, January 10, 2019, South Texas Health System and South Texas College came together for a check presentation benefiting Nursing and Allied Health Division. The $49,000 scholarship will provide opportunities for students to help reduce their financial burden and provide assistance upon continuing their education.

“South Texas Health System is always here to support us. They’re providing scholarships to help our students graduate and become registered nurses. They’re hiring our nurses, so it’s a win-win for everybody,” said STC President Dr. Shirley A. Reed. “The quality of healthcare is increasing each and every day in our region, and the expectations for the best quality healthcare are really very high. We have to work together to meet that public expectation.”

Speakers at the check presentation included Dr. Reed and South Texas Health System CEO Todd Mann, Dean for Nursing and Allied Health Dr. Jayson Valerio, and STC board chairman Paul Rodriguez.

“The fact that you’re willing to invest almost $50,000 in scholarships for our students says a lot,” Rodriguez said. “On behalf of the trustees, staff, administration, and students of South Texas College, thank you very much to South Texas Health System.”

The South Texas Health System foundation was developed in 1986 by Allen Miller, CEO of Universal Health Services. The company was designed for donations to organizations that provide educational benefits for allied health and nursing physicians.

“This is an exciting day for us knowing you’re going to use this check for scholarships. It’s warming to the heart for me as well,” Mann said.  “We were honored to be able to give this donation to South Texas College this year.”
