The City of Edinburg formally welcomed the RGV Vascular & Vein Institute during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 9, 2025, in a celebration hosted by the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce and Explore Edinburg. The event marked a pivotal step in regional healthcare development, highlighting the importance of early intervention in vascular health and the prevention of life-altering complications, such as limb amputation.

Ronnie Larralde (Executive Director, Edinburg Chamber of Commerce & Explore Edinburg), Councilman Jason de Leon, Dr. Pedro Mego (FSCAI, Interventional Cardiologist & Vascular Specialist), Dr. Schamma Salomon (RPVI, Vascular Specialist), and Councilman Gerry Lozano gather for a commemorative photo as Dr. Mego proudly holds a recognition plaque presented by the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce during the grand opening of the RGV Vascular & Vein Institute on July 9, 2025. Ronnie Larralde, Executive Director of the Chamber, opened the ceremony by thanking the community and the team behind the new institute. “We’re happy to be here with Dr. Pedro Mego, FSCAI, and Dr. Schamma Salomon, RPVI. Congratulations to you and your team for this wonderful opening in the City of Edinburg,” he said. Larralde emphasized Edinburg’s fast-paced growth and its emergence as a key hub for education, entertainment, and healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley. “With that comes a lot of responsibility,” he added, expressing gratitude that the Institute had chosen to join the city’s expanding medical community.

Several notable leaders were present at the ceremony, including Council Member Jason de Leon, newly appointed Council Member Gerry Lozano, former Mayor Richard Molina, and Marisa Gonzalez, Director of the Texas Healthcare Chamber of Commerce Alliance. Their presence reflected the city’s united front in support of better health outcomes and access to advanced medical care.

Commissioner Jason de Leon offered a warm welcome on behalf of Edinburg’s leadership. “We are looking forward to all the families and residents you’re going to help with this institute. Thank you for choosing Edinburg and welcome,” he said, emphasizing the city’s excitement for the services the Institute will provide to residents.

Representing the Texas Healthcare Chamber of Commerce Alliance, Director Marisa Gonzalez delivered glowing remarks about Dr. Mego’s contributions. “He is making waves. He is phenomenal in what he does—preventing amputations and providing the best care to every patient that walks in his door,” Gonzalez stated. She also acknowledged Dr. Mego’s role on the Chamber’s board, highlighting his influence in shaping healthcare access across the state.

Dr. Pedro Mego, a board-certified interventional cardiologist and vascular medicine specialist, responded with sincere gratitude. “First of all, I thank God, who blesses us every day,” he began. He described his team as a family, tracing their origins to the Mission Vascular Family Clinic and now evolving into the RGV Family. “I also thank the entire team—from front desk to techs to providers. We are now the RGV Family.”

Dr. Mego expressed special appreciation for his associate, Dr. Schamma Salomon, and named staff members Iryna, Paulina, Leah, and Silver, and team leader Dalia Cobos as essential to the clinic’s mission and daily operations. “Our commitment is to bring the best of ourselves—as professionals and as a facility—in the fight against PAD (Peripheral Artery Disease). Our goal is to prevent amputations, improve circulation, and allow wounds to heal,” he said. “To provide these services to this beautiful city of Edinburg, this beautiful community, will be our greatest joy.”

The ceremony culminated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony beneath the entrance marquee, followed by a community celebration featuring food, beverages, and balloon arrangements. The atmosphere was both festive and reflective, acknowledging the life-changing care that the new clinic aims to deliver.

Dr. Pedro Mego brings nearly two decades of vascular care experience to the Rio Grande Valley, where he’s been treating patients with Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and chronic venous disease since 2005. With clinic locations now in Mission, Weslaco, and Edinburg, his team offers advanced diagnostic tools and minimally invasive endovascular procedures designed to reduce hospital stays and speed recovery.

PAD, a circulatory condition that narrows or blocks arteries in the legs due to plaque buildup, poses significant risks if untreated. Symptoms range from mild leg cramping to critical limb ischemia, with potential for non-healing ulcers, rest pain, and gangrene. Major risk factors include diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and kidney disease, many of which are prevalent in South Texas.

At RGV Vascular & Vein Institute, patients benefit from non-invasive screenings, including ankle-brachial index tests, vascular ultrasound, and Doppler imaging. For those needing intervention, the Institute offers outpatient catheter-based treatments using balloons, wires, lasers, and stents to restore blood flow. In select cases, carbon dioxide (CO₂) is used as a contrast agent instead of iodine—an essential advancement for patients with kidney conditions.

Dr. Mego has become a vocal advocate for prevention, emphasizing the importance of walking, maintaining a healthy diet, and undergoing timely vascular assessments. “We always encourage second opinions. Too many amputations are preventable,” he has stated in prior interviews, referencing the region’s disproportionately high limb-loss rates.

As Edinburg continues its growth as a medical hub in the Rio Grande Valley, the presence of the RGV Vascular & Vein Institute not only expands access to life-saving vascular treatments but also deepens the city’s commitment to excellence in healthcare. Through a blend of clinical precision, innovation, and community engagement, Dr. Mego and his team are poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of residents in the Valley.
