Dr. Esmeralda Adame, founder of the Persistence in Adversity Foundation, is once again rallying the Rio Grande Valley community for a cause that brings both warmth and compassion. The foundation has launched its 6th Annual Blanket Drive, aiming to collect 1,000 new blankets for families, the elderly, and those in need across the region.

Dr. Adame said her inspiration for the initiative stems from a lifelong desire to serve others. “It was a dream of mine to one day be able to assist those in need,” she said. “Either through mentorship, scholarships, blankets, or just spending time with those that need advice or someone to talk to.” Through her foundation, that dream has evolved into a community movement dedicated to “spreading warmth through the winter months.”

Since its inception in 2020, the Blanket Drive has grown into a major regional effort. “We have collected over 8,000 new blankets and blessed more than 5,000 families throughout the RGV with the help of our supporters,” Dr. Adame shared. In addition to blankets, the foundation has occasionally added items like socks and toothbrushes to meet other basic needs.

Every year brings special moments that remind Dr. Adame why this mission matters. One of her most cherished memories is from a visit to the McAllen Transitional Care Center, where she brought her children to help distribute blankets. “The elderly were not only joyful to see the young kids but grateful for the blankets, and many cried because they hadn’t received a visit in a while,” she recalled.

The 2025 Blanket Drive began October 1 and runs through December 15, ensuring donations reach families in time for the Christmas season. “We need everyone’s support—one blanket at a time,” Dr. Adame emphasized. “We are also in need of collection hubs.”

Local organizations supporting this year’s effort include Coca-Cola, Taqueria Oviedo, Hot Works, The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce, Pharr Chamber of Commerce, Pharr Economic Development Corporation, Consor Engineering, SAMES, Inc., VME Engineering, and Halff Associates. “We are so thankful for those collaborating with us again this year,” Dr. Adame said. “However, we need everyone to join us in this selfless cause to brighten someone’s face this Christmas.”

Organizing the drive comes with challenges. “Some of the biggest challenges we face every year is having that first blanket,” she admitted. “Many tell us they only have one to give and think it won’t make a difference, but one is all we need—from 1,000 people.”

The foundation’s name reflects its mission. “It didn’t take much thought coming up with the name,” Dr. Adame explained. “I wanted to help others move forward regardless of their situations. The name reminds me of where I came from and how far I have come.”

Community members can support the effort by donating blankets, volunteering, or becoming drop-off locations. Those interested can contact the foundation at persistence_foundation@outlook.com or call 956-391-4255.

Beyond the Blanket Drive, the foundation also hosts the Be the Change Leadership Conference each May, equipping high school juniors and seniors with leadership and soft skills, and runs a mentorship circle connecting young adults with community leaders.

Looking ahead, Dr. Adame hopes to double the impact. “I envision the entire Valley contributing with us to reach 2,000 blankets each year,” she said. “I also hope to grow our volunteers, increase visits to nursing homes, clean more yards, and provide scholarships to students with special needs or hardships.”

As winter nears, her message is simple yet powerful: One blanket can make a difference.
