Dr. Charles Schwertner, a highly experienced orthopedic surgeon with 23 years of practice, recently shared his thoughts on the latest advancements in surgical technology during an exclusive interview with Mega Doctor News, the premier bilingual medical publication in the Rio Grande Valley. Although Dr. Schwertner does not use the newly unveiled da Vinci 5 robotic system in his orthopedic practice, he recognizes its significance and the potential benefits it brings to the medical community in Brownsville.

Originally from West Texas, Dr. Schwertner spent a significant portion of his career in Georgetown before relocating to the Rio Grande Valley, where he has been a member of the DHR Health team in Brownsville for approximately eight months. Despite being relatively new to the area, Dr. Schwertner has quickly adapted to the community and has become deeply invested in the region’s healthcare landscape. His sister’s long-term residence in the Valley has further strengthened his connection to the area, making him even more committed to providing top-quality care.

Dr. Schwertner brings over two decades of orthopedic surgery experience to DHR Health. His extensive career has equipped him with a profound understanding of the field, though his specialty has traditionally not involved robotic assistance. “While I don’t use robotic systems in my orthopedic practice, I am well aware of the advancements and potential these technologies hold,” Dr. Schwertner explains. “The da Vinci 5 system, in particular, represents a significant leap forward in surgical precision, and it’s exciting to see it being utilized here in Brownsville.”

During the unveiling of the da Vinci 5 robotic system at DHR Health Brownsville, Dr. Schwertner was keen to learn more about this cutting-edge technology despite it not directly applicable to his specialty. “The improvements in optics, tactile feedback, and overall precision in the da Vinci 5 system are remarkable,” he notes. “These advancements are particularly beneficial in general surgery and gynecology, where the system is primarily used. It’s a major enhancement for surgeons who rely on robotic assistance.”

Dr. Schwertner emphasizes the importance of these technological advancements for the Brownsville community, noting that introducing such state-of-the-art equipment aligns with DHR Health’s commitment to improving the quality and scope of healthcare services available in the region. “Investing in technologies like the da Vinci 5 not only enhances the level of care we can provide but also demonstrates our dedication to bringing the best possible medical services to our community,” he says.

Although robotic assistance is not a significant component of orthopedic surgery, Dr. Schwertner supports its use in other specialties where it can significantly improve patient outcomes. “As a surgeon, I understand the value of precision and control during procedures,” he explains. “While orthopedic surgery has its own set of tools and techniques, I fully support integrating robotic systems in areas where they can make a real difference.”

Dr. Schwertner envisions a bright future for DHR Health in Brownsville, particularly as the hospital continues integrating cutting-edge technologies and expanding its range of services. “The future is promising for DHR Health, and I believe that as we continue to grow and innovate, we will set new standards for medical care in the region,” he says.

Dr. Schwertner encourages the community to visit the hospital and observe these advancements firsthand, highlighting DHR Health’s commitment to bringing the latest innovations in healthcare to Brownsville. “It’s important for our community to see that they have access to some of the most advanced medical treatments right here at home,” he says. “These investments will enhance the quality of care and increase access to cutting-edge medical technologies for our patients.”

“I’m proud to be part of a team so committed to excellence,” Dr. Schwertner concludes. “Together, we’re making a real difference in the lives of our patients.”
