The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has officially sworn in Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D. as the first National Advisor for Nutrition, Health, and Housing, an appointment that aligns with the administration’s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) initiative.

In announcing the swearing-in, USDA Secretary Brooke L. Rollins stated, “There is no one more qualified than Dr. Carson to advise on policies that improve Americans’ everyday quality of life, from nutrition to healthcare quality to ensuring families have access to safe and stable housing.”   Rollins also cited “six in ten Americans living with at least one chronic disease, and rural communities facing unique challenges with respect to adequate housing” as reasons Dr. Carson’s insights are “critical.”

Carson, a retired neurosurgeon and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, said upon his appointment, “Today, too many Americans are suffering from the effects of poor nutrition. Through common-sense policymaking, we have an opportunity to give our most vulnerable families the tools they need to flourish.”

In his new role, Dr. Carson will advise President Trump and Secretary Rollins on matters related to nutrition, rural health quality, and housing accessibility, and serve as the USDA’s chief voice on those issues.   He is also expected to collaborate with the Rural Development Mission Area and participate in MAHA-related activities.   According to Reuters, he “will advise on nutrition, health and housing, with a focus on rural health investments.”

Under this appointment, Dr. Carson is also expected to play a role in the upcoming update to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which guide nutrition standards for federal programs, including SNAP and school lunch programs.   Rollins has indicated that Carson will be “crucial to implementing the rural health investment provisions of the One Big Beautiful Bill and advise on America First policies.”

State officials have already commented on the appointment. In a statement posted on the Texas Department of Agriculture’s website, Commissioner Sid Miller said, “Today’s swearing-in of my friend, Dr. Ben Carson, as the United States Department of Agriculture’s first National Nutrition Advisor is a big win for American families and farmers.” The statement continues: “His faith and his calm, steady voice will help ensure our kids grow up healthier and our producers have a strong and reliable market for the wholesome food they raise.”

Media coverage of the appointment highlights Carson’s extensive experience. Reuters notes that he “served as Housing and Urban Development secretary during President Donald Trump’s first term” and that he “will join Rollins in activities of the administration’s Make America Healthy Again Commission.”   Bloomberg similarly reports that Carson “will serve as the national adviser for nutrition, health, and housing, with a focus on rural health investments.”

As of now, detailed implementation plans and the full scope of Dr. Carson’s responsibilities under MAHA have not been publicly released.

In the neonatal intensive care unit, the most fragile patients in medicine are often the most heavily wired. Premature babies, some weighing less than a pound, can be tethered to a tangle of cables, monitors, and sensors. Each blood draw to check sugar levels or electrolytes means another needle, another bandage, another moment of stress for an infant whose skin is still forming.
