Edinburg, TX – The DHR Health Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Institute proudly announces the addition of Alexander Chase Castillo, M.D., a plastic surgeon who specializes in breast cancer reconstruction.

Since receiving his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX in 2014, Dr. Castillo has received a number of awards for excellence in academics and surgery including the UTMB Physician of the Month in 2018.

Dr. Castillo completed his residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at UTMB in Galveston in 2020 before starting a microsurgery fellowship at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore focusing on breast cancer reconstruction. During that fellowship and faculty mentorship, Dr. Castillo is credited with performing more than 200 DIEP Flap surgeries which uses the patient’s own tissue to reconstruct the breast and not require implants.

This specialized procedure involves removing the fat and skin from the lower abdomen and moving it to the chest to rebuild the breast. The blood vessels of the flap are re-connected in the chest using a microscope. Since the abdominal muscles are untouched or cut, this promotes a much faster post-operative recovery.

The Texas Tech 2010 graduate has traveled extensively, taking part in medical rotations in India, Argentina and Equador, but feels right at home in the Rio Grande Valley.
