Edinburg, TX—November 9, 2017—November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and if you want to help make profound change for lung cancer – the time is now! DHR Health Advanced Care Center is hosting a “Shine a Light on Lung Cancer” event locally as part of an effort to raise awareness about lung cancer and reduce the stigma associated with this disease. DHR Health will join 200 healthcare facilities across the country to provide hope, inspiration and support for those impacted by this disease.

At DHR Health Advanced Care Center, lung cancer is the fourth most prevalent site of cancer. Fortunately, the incidence rate for lung cancer in Texas has begun to decrease. In 2005, there were 68.3 cases per 100,000 people and in 2014, the number dropped to 51.7 cases per 100,000 people. This is also the case in the Rio Grande Valley, with a decrease of 12.3 cases per 100,000 people from 2005 – 2014.  Along with incidence, the mortality rate has been declining but there are still 37.8 deaths per 100,000 people in Texas and 23.6 deaths per 100,000 in the Rio Grande Valley.

“Overnight your life is changed. In my case, I can no longer work, you lose a great part of yourself but you are still alive,” states Alicia Lara, a local lung cancer survivor. “It was not easy, but I could continue forward thanks to the help of the people around me and the direct help of my doctors – Dr. Donna Cooper, Internist, Dr. Eugenio Galindo, Oncologist, and Dr. Jorge Garza, Cardiologist. It hasn’t been easy, but I thank God and everyone who has supported and continues to support me.”
