Edinburg, Texas – DHR Health, a leader in healthcare serving the Rio Grande Valley, announced today that Dr. Federico Vallejo, pulmonologist, has successfully performed his 100th Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy. This milestone demonstrates DHR Health’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art medical technology and excellence in patient care.

DHR Health is the only provider of the Ion system in the region, having introduced this advanced technology over a year ago. The Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy modernizes lung cancer diagnosis by enabling minimally invasive access to hard-to-reach lung nodules, facilitating early detection, and improving patient outcomes.

“Ion’s state-of-the-art technology is transforming lung cancer management,” said Dr. Federico Vallejo, DHR Health pulmonologist. “This breakthrough allows us to diagnose lung cancer at its earliest stages, potentially saving lives.”

The Ion system features an ultra-thin, highly maneuverable robotic catheter that navigates deep into the lungs, reaching areas previously inaccessible through traditional biopsies. By detecting lung cancer early-before it spreads-this advancement significantly enhances treatment effectiveness and patient survival rates. The procedure is safe and has low risk of complications.

Lung cancer remains one of the most common cancers worldwide, with studies from the American Cancer Society, World Health Organization, and National Cancer Institute indicating a higher prevalence in men. Recognizing the importance of early detection, DHR Health encourages proactive lung health screenings, particularly for individuals with a history of smoking or other risk factors.

To support early diagnosis, DHR Health offers low-dose CT lung cancer screenings at multiple RGV locations. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call the DHR Health Radiology Department at (956) 362-7503.
