The South Texas College Continuing Education and Workforce Development department is offering students a new pathway into the health care field through its combined GED and Phlebotomy program, a comprehensive option designed to help learners earn their high school equivalency while gaining an industry-recognized credential.

The program provides preparation for the General Educational Development (GED) exam with a 68-hour phlebotomy course, allowing students to complete both at the same time.

Participants will study all four GED subject areas: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics and Science, while receiving hands-on phlebotomy training that prepares them for certification and employment.

“This program is a great value for students,” said Carolina Montelongo, recruiting specialist for STC continuing education. “It allows students who may not yet have their GED diploma, but want to enter the health care field, to take care of both goals at once.”

Classes run from Feb. 2 through July 29 and are held in person, Monday through Thursday, from 6 to 9 p.m., making the program accessible to working adults and students with daytime commitments.

According to Montelongo, one of the program’s biggest advantages is affordability.

Students who qualify for financial aid can have the cost of the program fully covered through the Texas Public Educational Grant (TPEG). For those who do not qualify, STC offers payment plan options through its Continuing Education department.

In addition to classroom instruction, students have access to campus tutoring services, including the Center for Learning Excellence, to support their academic success throughout the program.

The program is designed to strengthen the South Texas workforce by providing residents with practical skills and access to higher-paying career opportunities in health care.

“This program gives our community a chance at a better lifestyle and long-term stability,” Montelongo said. “It prepares students for immediate employment and opens the door to further medical education.”

STC encourages prospective students who may feel nervous about returning to school to visit the Continuing Education office, where staff members provide step-by-step guidance throughout the enrollment process.
