Unidos Contra la Diabetes (UCD) has announced that its 2026 Mini-Symposium and Annual Dia-Beat-IT Health Fair is less than a month away. Moises Arjona Jr., MS, CHWI, Collective Impact Director for UCD, reminded community partners and stakeholders of the upcoming event, encouraging participation and support.
The Mini-Symposium is scheduled to take place on November 5, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at South Texas College’s Mid-Valley Campus, located at 400 N. Border Ave. in Weslaco, Texas. Registration for the symposium is now open through the official link provided by UCD. www.ucdrgv.org

In his announcement, Arjona emphasized the importance of the gathering, stating that the event “is a great opportunity to raise awareness about the growing rates of diabetes in the RGV, as well as other pressing issues such as food insecurity and access to health insurance.” He also encouraged elected officials to attend and welcome guests.
The organization has shared flyers featuring both the symposium’s speaker lineup and details of the Dia-Beat-IT Health Fair. These materials are being distributed across the Rio Grande Valley to increase outreach and community involvement.
UCD has established a reputation as a collaborative initiative dedicated to diabetes prevention in the region. According to the organization, “Unidos Contra la Diabetes is a collective impact initiative, with community partnerships dedicated to preventing diabetes in the Rio Grande Valley. We bring people together in a structured way to achieve social, behavioral, and sustainable community change.”
Founded in 2014, UCD began as a coalition of community leaders dedicated to improving health outcomes in the Rio Grande Valley by focusing on prediabetes and diabetes prevention. The group works alongside hospitals, community clinics, universities, foundations, and faith-based organizations.
“Our mission is to focus on upstream, strategic, and sustainable changes that strengthen families and communities,” the initiative stated. By uniting partners across Hidalgo, Willacy, Cameron, and Starr counties, UCD aims to enhance its impact on reducing diabetes rates while addressing related issues, including nutrition and access to healthcare.
Community members, stakeholders, and local leaders are invited to participate in the symposium and health fair, which will help continue building momentum in the fight against diabetes in the Rio Grande Valley.
