The Rio Grande Valley Diabetes Association (RGVDA) will host “The Face of Diabetes,” a special event celebrating the determination and resilience of individuals with diabetes. Scheduled for Saturday, June 14th, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Radisson McAllen Hotel Airport, the event aims to recognize local community members who continue to face the challenges of diabetes with strength, dignity, and hope.

This annual celebration will spotlight inspiring individuals whose stories exemplify perseverance and advocacy in the face of a chronic illness. Honorees include Amir Elsayed, Dr. Ofelia Averack, Judge Hector Bustos, Suzy Yoon Lee, Diana Stansberry, Rosie Aguirre, Armando Salinas, Visha Daniec, Natalie Buentello, Roy Cantu, Melba Gutierrez, Dr. Rosalva Dehoyos, Mike Robledo, Candace Rodriguez, Edward Polaco, and Rick Aguirre.

In addition to the awards ceremony, the event will feature a fashion show with models from the Debi Lou Modeling Academy. Macy’s will provide the latest apparel for the runway, adding a stylish flair to the meaningful occasion.

The RGVDA, founded in 2007 and based in McAllen, Texas, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing diabetes and reducing its complications through education, early detection, and community outreach. All funds raised are used locally to support diabetes management programs, meal planning education, and support groups for children and adults.

As of 2025, the organization is led by President and Founder Dr. Monzer H. Yazji, MD, with Dr. Luis Reyes serving as Chairman. The board of directors includes Amir Elsayed, Victor Daniec, and Iliana Guerra Martinez, RD, LD, CDE.
