Like many diseases, the risk of developing cancer increases with age. According to the CDC, more than two-thirds of all new cancers are diagnosed in individuals ages 60 and older, with breast, lung, prostate, colon and bladder cancers among the most common.

Leading a healthy life is important at all ages, but with a heightened risk for cancer, older adults need to be especially vigilant.

Though cancer is a worrisome threat, it does not have to signal the end of life. Through education on the risks and warning signs, preventative efforts like lifestyle changes, knowing your treatment options and having a strong support system in place, individuals living with cancer can maintain a high quality of life.

To help educate the Valley’s senior citizen population on the warning signs of common cancers and how to sustain a fulfilled life if diagnosed, South Texas Health System has joined forces with Prominence Health Plan for the next installment of its Senior Living Seminar Series, “Living with Cancer.” Launched in June with a program on diabetes, the series aims to help local senior citizens live a healthier lifestyle as they age.

Topics include: The Warning Signs of Cancer, led by a South Texas Health System physician; Surviving Cancer, a discussion with a local senior in remission; Healthy Cooking, a special cooking demonstration featuring foods that fight cancer, led by South Texas Health System’s Dietary Department; and Stability Exercises, led by the South Texas Health System Outpatient Rehabilitation program. In addition to the talks and demonstrations, the seminar will include a health fair offering free screenings including blood pressure checks.
