City Begins Providing Free Flu Shots to Vulnerable Population

Be POWERflu Campaign Aims to Protect Seniors

The City of El Paso Department of Public Health and the El Paso Fire Department have partnered with local organizations to begin offering flu vaccines to seniors 65 years and older. Image for illustration purposes.

EL PASO, Texas – The City of El Paso Department of Public Health and the El Paso Fire Department have partnered with local organizations to begin offering flu vaccines to seniors 65 years and older, our most vulnerable population.

While the City will provide free flu vaccines to only seniors at this time, once the City receives its complete allocation of flu vaccines, the City will provide free flu vaccines to all eligible individuals.

The “Be PowerFlu” events are free of charge for seniors 65 years and older and require no appointment or insurance. Residents are reminded that all individuals getting the flu shot will be required to wear a face covering.

The “Be POWERflu” prevention campaign is meant to reduce the number of flu cases and prevent serious related illness during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that individuals receive a flu shot every year as protection against serious illness due to the flu.

Reducing the number of flu cases will also reduce the number of flu-related hospitalizations, which in turn will help keep hospital rooms available for those being treated for COVID-19 infections and other serious illnesses or conditions.
