Edinburg, TX – 10/31/17 – DHR Health is proud to announce it has been recognized as the 2017 Employer of the Year by Workforce Solutions. This honor is awarded to an employer whose efforts and initiatives have had an extraordinary effect on the state of Texas, other employers, workers, and the communities in which the employer does business.

DHR Health has over 4,700 employees, including over 1,300 nurses! As one of the largest employers in Hidalgo County, DHR Health continues to work toward the development of new career opportunities for members of the community and the advancement of education for current employees. In 2017, DHR Health and Workforce Solutions secured funding for workforce training through the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Skills Development Fund. This $2.6 million grant will provide 2,961 new and existing workers in the healthcare field with advanced medical training.

DHR Health was also instrumental in the creation of a dual enrollment nursing education program for high school students – a first of its kind program that provides students with a pathway into health professions. The dual enrollment program was formed in collaboration with Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD), South Texas College, Region One Education Service Center (Region One), and Schools for South Texas Independent School District (South Texas ISD). The dual enrollment program allows for expanded educational opportunities while also addressing the healthcare needs of our region by working to alleviate the nursing shortage that challenges local healthcare providers.  The program provides high school students the opportunity to receive their Associate Degree in Nursing while still in high school; the first cohort received their diplomas in May 2017.
