Nearly 240 South Texas College graduates were recently honored by the Valley Initiative for Development and Advancement (VIDA) in a special ceremony recognizing their successful completion of career training programs, an achievement made possible through VIDA’s transformative support in tuition and mentorship.

Each graduate received a distinctive stole, symbolizing their dedication, perseverance and the impact of VIDA’s life-changing assistance.

“STC graduates, you’ve gone beyond the classroom, completing workshops, giving back through community service and showing incredible resilience through every challenge,” said Felida Villarreal, president and chief executive officer of VIDA. “Today is not just a graduation, it’s the beginning of your next chapter. Congratulations, Class of 2025, we can’t wait to see what you achieve next.”

The nonprofit organization provides college students with support in tuition, textbooks, supplies, child care and transportation, along with numerous workshops in mental health, career coaching and counseling.

The initiative is designed to help students pursue careers in high-demand fields like health care, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and specialized trades such as welding and diesel technology, with the goal of strengthening the Rio Grande Valley’s workforce by empowering individuals to succeed in these vital industries and achieve economic prosperity.

“STC is proud to be an institution that is constantly evolving with specialized programs and strong partnerships, especially with VIDA, which has been a remarkable ally in providing opportunities across the RGV,” said STC President Ricardo J. Solis, Ph.D. “Together, we’re bridging education with the needs of the global economy, offering high-demand programs and ensuring that every graduate finds gainful employment.”

For Associate Degree in Nursing graduate Jose Mercado, STC and VIDA’s support played a crucial role in giving him a second chance at a nursing career, offering encouragement and mentorship throughout his journey in a rigorous program.

“After many years as a welder, STC gave me a second chance to become a nurse. I had tried before, but chose to work away from home,” shared the McAllen native. “Now, I have the chance to be closer to home, in my community, where I can help people when they need it most. It always feels good to help someone turn their worst day around and make a positive impact.”

Mercado, 30, who now aims to work in a hospital emergency room, credits VIDA for providing the support and encouragement that helped him pursue his dream.

“VIDA didn’t just help with tuition, they believed in me, when I didn’t believe in myself,” Mercado said. “When I was struggling and doubting if I was meant to be a nurse, my counselor encouraged me to keep going. They gave me life skills, helped me plan for the future and connected me to my community through service. VIDA invested in me, they gave me the tools, the confidence and the support to achieve my dream.”

Mercado, who also aspires to continue his education and earn a bachelor’s degree in Nursing, expressed his gratitude for the challenging and supportive environment STC provided throughout his academic path.

“It’s been a journey that pushed me to my limits. STC, like VIDA, inspired me through both the program and my instructors. The workload was intense, but as I progressed, I realized how it was preparing me for the real world,” he said. “Now that I am graduating, I feel ready and confident. STC’s program didn’t just teach me nursing, it shaped me into a nurse who’s ready to take on the challenges of the profession.”

Marking its 30th year, VIDA has supported nearly 750 students across the RGV, with 83% being first-generation students and more than 300 credentials earned, 57% of which are in allied health.

Tony Aguirre Jr., VIDA’s board chairman, addressed this milestone and the organization’s impressive growth.

“This year marks 30 years of VIDA, 30 years of changing lives. We started with just 20 welders and now we’re graduating hundreds every year,” he said. “And just like STC, our growth has been exponential. It’s not just about the financial help or counseling we provide -it’s about you, the graduates. It’s your dedication, your sacrifices and your drive to succeed. You’re the ones who made it happen, and now you’re ready to provide for your families and take on the future.”
