Pharr, TX – On May 31, countries around the world will mark World No Tobacco Day, which this year is focusing on the commitment to quit. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2021 World No Tobacco Day campaign, Commit to Quit, highlights how during COVID-19 many tobacco users have shown interest on wanting to quit smoking.
The WHO mentioned that “[w]hen evidence was released this year that smokers were more likely to develop severe disease with COVID-19 compared to non-smokers, it triggered millions of smokers to want to quit tobacco” use. The WHO recognizes quitting is not easy, so they developed toolkits to help individuals begin their path to ceasing any tobacco smoke.
At Behavioral Health Solutions, we have the Tobacco Prevention and Control Coalition in Willacy and Cameron counties, and they go out to the community to educate both adults and youth about the dangers on smoking tobacco and provide cessation support for anyone interested.
To receive resources and information from the coalition contact Tobacco Coalition Specialist Marcus Puente at mpuente@bhsst.org or (956) 423-0018 ext. 13.
The mission of Behavioral Health Solutions is to provide a multilevel approach inclusive of prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery to reduce substance abuse and related co-existing conditions in our communities, encourage healthier life-styles related to at-risk public health behaviors, and promote stronger families.
