A complex neurological disorder, migraines are recurring headaches that may consist of severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation, usually on one side of the head.
Accompanied by severe pain and symptoms, a migraine can be so debilitating that it can impact daily life. In fact, more than 90% of those affected by migraines say they interfere with education, career and social activities, according to the American Migraine Foundation.
Typically lasting for hours , even days, the attacks can happen at any time. While symptoms can vary from person to person, the most common include nausea, vomiting and extreme sensitivity to light and sound, as well as brain fog and dizziness.
“Most people don’t know how incapacitating migraines can be,” says Tom Castañeda, System Director of Marketing & Public Relations, South Texas Health System. “They can cause debilitating, throbbing, one-sided head pain that can leave you in bed for days. And they can significantly impact several aspects of life, including work, school, social activities and relationships, as well as lead to mental health challenges like depression and anxiety.”
Over time, the severity and frequency of migraine attacks can contribute to feelings of frustration, stress and isolation.
Unfortunately, there’s no specific test to confirm a migraine diagnosis. They’re typically diagnosed based on a thorough history of symptoms and a physical exam.
With distinct phases – prodrome, aura, headache and postdrome – understanding migraines is the first step toward being able to identify triggers and treat an attack early on.
While the causes of migraine aren’t fully understood, research suggests that genetics and environmental factors play a role. Others include family history, age, gender and hormonal changes.
