One of the most important jobs a parent can have is keeping their child safe, especially when riding in a vehicle.

With motor vehicle accidents being a leading cause of death for children between the ages one to 13 years old, perthe National Traffic Safety Administration, a car seat is a tool parents must legally utilize to ensure their child’s safety when riding in a vehicle.

It’s imperative that parents understand the importance of car seat safety as most of them aren’t installed or used correctly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which makes them less effective.

When a car seat is installed appropriately and a child is secured properly, car seat use has been known to reduce the risk of injury in a crash by 71% to 82%, per the CDC.

While the vast majority of parents understand the importance of car seats, some may become overwhelmed due to the distinct types and models on the market. The type of seat a child needs depends on several things, including theirage, size and developmental needs.

Parents and caregivers can reduce the risk of their children experiencing serious, life-threatening injuries or dying in a motor vehicle accident by ensuring their precious cargo is properly buckled in car seats.

To help Rio Grande Valley parents and caregivers protect their children’s well-being while in a motor vehicle, South Texas Health System Children’s will dedicate its latest Let’s Talk Children’s Health webinar to car seat safety.
