A key component to one’s overall wellbeing and quality of life, mental health enables us to cope with the stresses of daily life, realize our potential and work well together to contribute to our communities.
Intricately linked to physical, emotional, psychological and social wellbeing, mental health touches many parts of our lives, affecting how we think, feel and act. From our relationships with others to what makes us feel fulfilled and how we deal with life’s challenges, mental health can affect factors like self-esteem and self-worth, the way we find meaning and value in life.
Considering the significant role mental health plays in each aspect of life, it’s important to protect and improve ourpsychological wellness.
“Mental health refers to more than the absence of mental illness,” says Jessica Becker, Chief Executive Officer, South Texas Health System Behavioral. “It’s a state of well-being vital at every stage of life that includes managing stress, managing emotions and keeping a positive outlook. When we neglect to care for our mental health, it can lead to mental illnesses that disrupt daily life like stress, anxiety and depression.”
In the United States, one in 20 adults experience serious mental illness issues each year, per the National Alliance on Mental Illness, with symptoms often being invisible to family, friends and acquaintances – or even invisible to oneself. That’s why it’s essential to acknowledge when one’s mental health is being to take a toll.
Understanding and becoming aware of our mental health and realizing that it responds to both internal and external stimuli, meaning our mental health can fluctuate over time, can help us prioritize our mental health.
The first step toward overall well-being is maintaining good mental health. That requires ongoing awareness and care that includes access to health services like counseling and therapy, which can help foster resilience, enable better responses to challenges and help maintain balance.
So, this Mental Health Awareness Month, South Texas Health System Behavioral is dedicating its latest Let’s Talk Mental Health online seminar to helping Rio Grande Valley residents understand the crucial role mental health plays in every aspect of our lives, including decision-making and interactions with others.
Streaming live via STHS’ Facebook page on Thursday, May 1, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., a mental health professional will discuss the significance of mental health and how maintaining it can help enhance relationships, productivity and overall happiness.
