At just 19 years old, Gianna Chapa has already built a foundation for her future that reflects both determination and heart.

The Weslaco High School graduate is now pursuing her associate degree in Psychological Science at South Texas College, a field she chose because of her deep curiosity about the human behavior.

“I have always believed there is more to human behavior than what we see at the surface,” she said. “It is important we understand the patterns behind the behavior to prevent trauma and allow others to understand the person they are.”

Her interest in learning began early. While still in high school, Chapa enrolled in dual credit courses through STC and got a head start on her college journey. That expertise prepared her for the academic rigor ahead and gave her confidence stepping into her major.

Like many students, Chapa faced the challenges of balance. Between her coursework, a part-time job and family responsibilities, she often found herself stretched thin.

“What I find most challenging about my education is balance,” she said. “I have a job and family, and it is difficult balancing these very crucial parts of your life while still having time for yourself.”

Despite the challenges, she finds fulfillment in the classroom. For her, the reward is more than grades or credits, it’s the knowledge itself.

“I love learning and I love applying what I’ve learned to better understand myself and those around me,” she said. “Doing this, especially with what I am studying, has provided me with new perspectives.”

Her support system has been key to her success. Chapa credits her aunt and uncle, both STC faculty members, as well as her grandmother for always encouraging her to aim high.

“They have always stressed the importance of my education and have inspired me to reach for more than I think I am capable of,” she said.

Chapa is also grateful for the opportunities STC provides. Affordable tuition has given her the flexibility to focus on her studies rather than juggling multiple jobs.

“STC has allowed me to balance my life effectively,” she said. “Because tuition is affordable, I don’t have to prioritize working just to be able to pay for my classes.”

Looking ahead, Chapa has big goals and plans to graduate this upcoming spring. She wants to continue her education, with the ultimate dream of becoming an educator at the university level to inspire and guide the next generation the same way her family and professors have inspired her.
