Starr County, Texas — Workforce Solutions (WFS) announced the launch of the $100,000 Healthcare Internship Fund, an innovative workforce development initiative designed to create structured, paid internship opportunities for 91 students pursuing high-demand healthcare careers across the region.

The Healthcare Internship Fund will provide valuable work-based learning experiences for 11 postsecondary students enrolled in South Texas College’s Vocational Nursing Program and 80 secondary students from Roma ISD participating in EMS Basic, Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, and Medical Billing & Coding programs.

Through paid, supervised clinical internships, students will gain hands-on experience in patient care, emergency medical services, clinical assistance, pharmacy operations, and healthcare administration while applying the skills learned in the classroom to real-world healthcare settings.

Starr County Memorial Hospital will serve as the project’s primary employer partner, hosting interns across its main hospital in Rio Grande City and two rural clinics, including the Roma Family Health Clinic.

“We are committed to developing innovative workforce solutions that connect education, industry, and opportunity,” said Francisco Almaraz, WFS Chief Executive Officer. “The Healthcare Internship Fund is an investment in our students, our healthcare providers, and the future of our region. By providing paid, hands-on experiences in real healthcare settings, we are helping students build meaningful careers while creating a stronger local talent pipeline that addresses critical workforce shortages across South Texas.”

The project aligns with the Texas Workforce Commission’s strategic priorities by expanding work-based learning opportunities, strengthening employer partnerships, and increasing access to career pathways in underserved communities.

Workforce Solutions serves Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy counties. The primary goal of the WFS Board is to respond to the needs of local employers and workers through locally designed, demand-driven workforce development initiatives.
