South Texas Health System Clinics boasts several top physicians in the country — each helping advance healthcare in the region, so local patients do not need to leave the Rio Grande Valley to get vital medical attention, including life-altering procedures and treatments. They are leaders within the community and beyond.

Board Certified Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgeon Daniel Romanelli, M.D., FAAOS, was recently selected by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) to volunteer on the ABOS Standard Setting Committee to help determine the passing standard for the ABOS Recertification Examination in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.

“We appreciate Dr. Romanelli taking time away from his practice to help the ABOS in this important endeavor,” said ABOS Executive Medical Director David F. Martin, MD. “We need subject matter experts like Dr. Romanelli to lend their expertise to the scoring process.”

Dr. Romanelli joined STHS Clinics in January 2022 and brings with him more than 20 years of private practice experience. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery; and his additional achievements and experience throughout his professional years includes serving as a traveling team physician for the U.S. National Soccer team for 11 years and being appointed as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery of Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine at New Mexico State University.

As part of the Standard Setting Committee, Dr. Romanelli collaborated with several other leading surgeons from across the country to discuss what are among the most important concepts in sports medicine — from basic science to procedures and pathology — to set the standard for the four-hour 175 question board certification exam.

“I’m honored to be in this profession and to have been selected to help,” Dr. Romanelli said. “It’s giving back to a community of surgeons in a profession that has been so good to me and allowed me to do the things I love — a profession that allows me to take care of people, whether a recreational or elite athlete.

“It gives me great satisfaction when a patient recovers well and is able to get back to their life before injury, whether it’s work or playing a sport they love.”
