On July 25, 2025, the Edinburg Police Department paid a beautiful “living tribute” to one of their longtime fellow investigators, John Henry Olivarez. John, who has dedicated over two decades to serving his community, was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. He was brought by two Edinburg police colleagues/friends from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston to DHR Health Hospice in Edinburg.

As the ambulance arrived at the facility at Cornerstone Plaza, there was a powerful display of unity and respect. Fellow officers, friends, and community members gathered to greet John to thank him for his service to his beloved hometown. It was a quiet but meaningful show of support and appreciation for someone who had spent his life selflessly serving and showing up for others.

“He was an exceptional investigator and someone you could rely on. He was a tremendous person with integrity. I consider him not only a brother in blue but a brother, like a member of my family,” said Lt. Orlando Garcia of the Edinburg Police Department.

Serving four years in the United States Marine Corps, John joined the Edinburg Police Department in 2002, after being honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. His colleagues say his service was marked by excellence, having worked as a Patrol Officer, SWAT Team Member, Task Force Officer assigned to the FBI, and Criminal Investigator.

“John felt a calling to do something meaningful. He specifically chose the Marines because they aligned with his core values. As a member of the Edinburg Police Department, John took pride in serving the community he grew up in,” said his spouse, Sonia Olivarez, who said he felt a sense of commitment and pride in protecting his community, as well as being able to be of service to the citizens around him.

Throughout his career, John received many accolades and recognitions. In 2014, he was awarded the Medal of Valor for his heroic actions during a dangerous incident in La Joya, where he and several officers were ambushed while attempting to execute a high-risk arrest warrant.

Despite the devastating diagnosis, the Olivarez family has found comfort in the care provided by DHR Health Hospice.

“When we learned of our transition to hospice, we were scared and unsure of what type of experience we’d have or how John would be cared for. However, our experience with DHR Health has brought us so much comfort and peace. We thank them for their compassion, thoughtfulness, and hospitality,” said Sonia.

“At DHR Health Hospice, it is our sacred honor to care for individuals like Investigator Olivarez who have dedicated their lives to serving others. Our team is committed to providing compassionate, dignified care that honors not only the individual, but their life’s legacy. We are humbled to walk alongside the Olivarez family during this tender chapter,” said Marissa D. Anderson, DHR Health Hospice administrator and Director of Nursing.

Indeed, John Henry Olivarez is more than just a criminal investigator. He is a husband, father, Marine, and a hero. His legacy of service will carry on in the lives he has touched and in the community he has proudly served.
